Experienced Estate Planning / transactional / probate attorney

AB Legal is hiring an experienced estate planning, transactional, and probate attorney. We are a young firm, intentionally small, and we care about doing excellent work for real people and real businesses. We live in the practical, the modern, and the unapologetically human. This is not an entry-level training ground. If you need constant supervision, long training wheels, or a rigid hierarchy, this will not be your favorite job. If you are a self-starting lawyer who can steer the work, think strategically, and deliver clean product, let’s talk.

PLEASE READ ENTIRE AD PRIOR TO SUBMITTING YOUR RESUME. INSTRUCTIONS TO APPLY ARE AT THE END OF THE JOB POSTING.

The Job

You will lead planning, administration, and transactional matters from intake to signature to completion. You will translate messy facts and family dynamics into clear decisions and clean documents. You will spot risks, propose options, and explain tradeoffs in plain English.

Core Responsibilities

You’ll design and draft the works with the help of our estate planning software (trusts, wills, powers of attorney, advance directives, transfer-on-death deeds, business succession plans, and whatever else keeps the wheels turning). You’ll run the design meetings that actually feel like conversations, not interrogations. You’ll turn client goals into crisp, clean documents that sound like humans wrote them. You’ll guide signings, keep funding on track, and make sure everything gets done instead of just “almost done.”

You’ll guide families through the world’s least fun paperwork with equal parts competence and compassion. You’ll open estates, file the things that keep judges happy, and translate probate deadlines into normal-person language. With the help of staff, you’ll keep track of notices, inventories, publications, creditor claims, and distributions without letting emotion or chaos derail the plan. You’ll help fiduciaries do their jobs well (and legally) while keeping expectations realistic. You’ll know when to push for a hearing, when to pick up the phone, and when to remind everyone that grief (or outrage) and government forms do not mix well, but we’ll get them through it anyway.

You’ll handle the business work that keeps our clients’ lives running. Form LLCs, draft operating agreements, close buy-sells, record deeds, and clean up the messes left by “we found this online” contracts. You’ll think ahead, catch small errors before they become expensive problems, and coordinate with lenders, title companies, and humans who speak in acronyms. You’ll understand that every deal has a personality, and your job is to make sure the paperwork matches it, tight, clean, enforceable, and ideally not soul-crushing to read.

You’ll talk to clients like they’re people, not cases. You’ll run design meetings that feel like conversations, not depositions. You’ll hold space when things get emotional, set clear expectations, and protect your calendar with firm but kind boundaries. You’ll tell the truth, especially when it’s hard, and keep everyone moving forward without drama or ego.

You’ll know where each matter stands, what needs to happen next, and who’s doing it. You’ll delegate to paralegals and assistants with clarity, check their work, and make sure deadlines aren’t just met, they’re managed. You’ll keep filings, recordings, and tasks moving.

You’ll make sure templates stay sharp. Checklists get used. Notes are clear. Decisions are documented. You’ll track your time, your tasks, and your impact, because accuracy and accountability are part of how we protect our clients and our own will to keep doing this every day.

This is not a learn-on-the-job role. If you have never led a full estate plan from intake to funding, never shepherded a probate to final settlement, or never closed a basic business transaction, this is not the right fit today.

The Attitude

  • You believe lawyering is both art and service.

  • You don’t treat people like files or act like empathy is weakness.

  • You see policies and systems as safety nets, not shackles.

  • You understand that recording time, using templates, and following procedures aren’t about control, they’re how we stay sustainable, serve well, and sleep at night.

  • You value inclusion that’s lived, not just posted. Our office is a place where everyone shows up as they are, where pronouns matter, and where respect isn’t negotiable. If you roll your eyes at that, this will not be your place.

  • You know how to laugh at yourself, own your mistakes, and give credit freely.

  • You think good work speaks louder than ego.

  • You’re allergic to micromanagement but grounded enough to check your deadlines.

  • You like a workplace where kindness and competence hold equal weight, and where the coffee’s strong and that values progress over perfection, and people over posturing.

Where you work

We work from home on and off, but presence here does matter. The first 90 days are in-office so you actually learn how we do things (our systems, our tone, our way of treating clients.) We try to train hard once, so you don’t spend your career here unlearning shortcuts. After onboarding, you’ll have flexibility, but we stay grounded in the belief that showing up, in person, with people, is part of what makes us different.

Our clients like to meet face-to-face, and we like it too. We built our downtown El Dorado office to be part of the community we serve. It’s open and collaborative, no corner offices, no walls between ideas (actually, there are no offices) It’s bright, lived-in, and full of people doing good work for the right reasons.

What you bring

  • Licensed in Kansas and in good standing.

  • At least four years of solid experience in estate planning, probate, or transactional work.

  • You’ve actually led client meetings, not just sat in the corner taking notes.

  • You can explain options and tradeoffs in plain English and help clients make confident decisions.

  • You draft well and know version control is not optional.

  • You’re comfortable with modern tech tools. We use Smokeball and WealthCounsel, and the usual productivity suspects.

Salary and benefits

We pay competitively for experience and contribution. This is not an entry-level role, and we will not treat it like one. Benefits reflect real life, not fantasy. Details will be discussed during interviews.

Estate Planning/ Probate Paralegal

AB Legal is also looking for an experienced paralegal to join our team. We’re a young firm; we’re still small on purpose and prioritize doing things with intention.  We work in business law, estate planning, and litigation, and aim to do it in a way that’s practical, modern, and unapologetically human. We’re not traditional. We don’t want to be. We run on clear communication, solid systems, and shared ownership of the work. We believe people do their best work when expectations are clear, their contributions matter, and they have room to take initiative.

PLEASE READ ENTIRE AD PRIOR TO SUBMITTING YOUR RESUME. INSTRUCTIONS TO APPLY ARE AT THE END OF THE JOB POSTING.

The Job

We need a paralegal who is organized, resourceful, and ready to support multiple attorneys across a range of matters. Prior estate planning and probate experience is required. This is our core need and where we absolutely must have you hit the ground running. Experience with WealthCounsel is a huge plus and will move your application to the top of the list. We also handle business advising / business disputes and general litigation. Your role will include preparing estate planning documents, managing probate filings and deadlines, and supporting litigation with research, document drafting, and case management.

You should be confident navigating case files, pulling key information from client communications and documents, and taking responsibility for keeping matters organized and moving. You should know how to get your own questions answered, whether that means digging into the file, checking past emails, or reaching out to the right person. If your first instinct is to look for the answer, suggest a better way, or take the lead on a lingering task without being asked, you’ll fit right in. That kind of ownership is what we reward with trust and meaningful bonus opportunities.

To be totally clear, this is not a place to get your wings. We’re specifically looking for someone with real experience in estate planning and probate, not just general paralegal skills. We need you to come in and take charge of this part of the firm, help us tighten systems and honestly, boss us around a little (in the best way).

The Attitude

  • You take pride in delivering accurate, professional work, even if it’s a Tuesday and no one’s watching.

  • You track your time without being chased.

  • You don’t ghost on open loops.

  • You aren’t offended by the occasional (okay, frequent) use of the f word.

  • You don’t mind talking to other humans (clients, teammates, whoever).

  • You aren’t scared of tech and are willing to learn new systems without throwing your laptop.

  • You take your work seriously, but not yourself too seriously.

Where You Work

This position is hybrid, but we don’t have a fancy corner office or mahogany conference table. Our in-person time is about collaboration, problem-solving, and connecting. We meet in our El Dorado, Kansas office space or wherever makes sense that day. When we’re not together, you’re free to work from wherever you’re most productive. We care about results, not where your laptop is plugged in.

Hours & Compensation

This is a full-time position with a standard schedule of Monday through Friday. We offer competitive pay, flexibility, and a team that works hard without pretending to be a family. We’re building benefits that actually support people, not just check a box. We’ll talk salary based on your experience.

How to Apply

If this sounds like your kind of role, we want to hear from you. PLEASE DO NOT APPLY THROUGH AN ONLINE SYSTEM. FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS:

Send a short email to team@ablegalks.com with your resume (PDF format) attached. Your subject line should be: [YOUR LAST NAME IN ALL CAPS] – Paralegal Application.

In the body of your email, tell us:

  1. The most satisfying legal thing you’ve ever worked on

  2. One system or tool you rely on to stay organized

  3. Your walk-up song if you were entering a courtroom

We’re stoked to meet you, and not just the polished LinkedIn version. We want you, the one who knows their shit, rolls their eyes at outdated legal nonsense, and still finds joy in getting things done.
